Summer Look for Manicure
Score a perfect 10 with this season's sizzling colors.
Bright or Subdued
Craving some color fun this summer? Try a new manicure or pedicure shade! You'll find a host of polish options this year, from bright and neutrals to shimmers and glitters. Read on for the hottest new nail trends, plus fresh manicure and pedicure ideas.
Bright are Back
Pale nail shades are classics year-round, giving a polished look. But they're not the best option for showing off glowing summer skin or sexy strappy sandals. This year, bright are big news, in popsicle-bold fuchsias, oranges, purples, and pinks. These colors look beautiful on short, rounded-square nails (on long nails, they're overkill). Or, if a bright manicure seems too forward, wear these shades on toes for a more demure flash of color. Tip: Invest in a very-glossy topcoat, as bright polish looks its best when it's gleaming and shiny. Apply topcoat over your manicure every other day.
Our Polish Picks: Chanel Dream Gloss, Glamour Gloss, and Passion Gloss; Orly Cherry Bomb, Orange Pop, and Sourball
Muted Makes News
On the flip side of bright comes summer's other big nail trend: Muted neutrals. Shades of brown, shell, and copper are the perfect complement to earthy summer clothes, and look great on self-tanned skin. This year, however, these shades get an update with shots of shimmer and glitter. What's more, they have brown bases, so they work with all skin tones. Because muted shades are subtler than brights, they look good on almost any nail length, from very short to a bit longer (no more than a quarter inch beyond your fingertip).
Tip: Match finger- and toenails for a chic, monochromatic look.
Our Polish Picks: Maybe line Wet Shine Diamonds in the Rough, Brushed Copper, and Shocked Shell; OPI Crim-Sun, Day at the Peach, Coral Reef, and Sand-erella.
New Nail Techniques The new French manicure:
Celebrities like J.Lo have made the French manicure hip again, and this summer, the experts at Orly have put their own twist on the look. Called a Candy Manicure, this look starts with a base gloss shade from Orly's Candy Kisses summer collection. Try Sweet Tart or Swizzle Stick. Apply two coats to nails and allow to dry. Then, sweep a bright shimmer polish, such as Berry Blast, over the tip of your nail (where the white would usually go). Let dry, then top with a clear hardening coat. You can change the base and tip colors to fit your outfits and moods!
Toenail Art
If bright aren't quite bold enough for you, the experts at Creative Nail Design have another option: Toenail art! Unlike the nail art you're used to -- often tacky and garish -- today's art is actually fun and trendy. Choose a soft pink or peach shade as your base color, and ask your pedicurist to paint a design of your choice onto the big toe of each foot. Creative Nail is showcasing cherries, flowers, and patterns such as herringbone this season. Another option: Tasteful stick-on nail decals, which you can use when you do a home pedicure. Simply stick a decal onto each big toenail when your base polish is dry, and seal with topcoat.
